Produced with canvas, leather, and black paint, this hard hat is similar in composition to those first manufactured by Edward W. Bullard in 1919. The word “JOURNAL” was painted across the side of the hat in white lettering so that others could quickly identify Garrett as press amongst construction workers while he visited the dam site. Most notably, Six Companies, Inc. required all workers to wear protective headgear while on the job, marking the construction of the Hoover Dam as the first project to enforce a hard hat policy.

<text>The original Johnson & Johnson brand First-Aid Kit entered the commercial market in 1888. However, increased travel in the early 1920s prompted the company to create this pocket-sized "Travelkit." This portable, tin kit is packed with essentials to treat minor injuries in remote locations, including BAND-AID brand bandages, antiseptic, and burn ointment. The compactness of the Travelkit made it ideal for people "on the go," or where medical care facilities were scarce, like at the Hoover Dam construction site at the Black Canyon.

<text>Compared to Johnson & Johnson's "First-Aid Travelkit," this medical kit includes additional equipment for more extensive care. The contents are kept together in a large wooden box held securely by two gold metal clasps. Most notably, this case is made distinct by the letters "BC" painted on the right and a large "4" painted on the left. These features suggest that the box was part of a collection of medical kits used at the dam site or a nearby hospital in town. The immense dangers posed to construction workers at the Hoover Dam necessitated easy access to medical equipment such as this portable kit.

Made of pressed wood pulp treated with chemicals, celluloid became a practical replacement for ivory, which was becoming more difficult to procure because of pressure from environmentalists in the first decades of the twentieth century.
