Title

Hand Mirror

Description

This delicate handheld mirror once belonged to a Boulder City resident. The front of the mirror features an oval-shaped glass encapsulated by yellow marbled celluloid. On the back is a decorative motif that adds to its elegance. Marbled celluloid was a popular style choice for household items because it was easily mass-produced at a consumer-friendly price point. Made of pressed wood pulp treated with chemicals, celluloid became a practical replacement for ivory, which was becoming more difficult to procure because of pressure from environmentalists in the first decades of the twentieth century.
