Train Whistle
Dublin Core
Title
Train Whistle
Description
Once a belonging of well-known Boulder City resident Erma Godbey, this children’s toy mimics the sound of a locomotive’s steam whistle. Godbey’s husband, Thomas, was part of the first wave of workers hired to build the Hoover Dam in 1931. Godbey played this whistle as part of a “kitchen band.” Kitchen bands were a popular fad in the early twentieth century, consisting of kitchen utensils repurposed as musical instruments. In some instances, adults gave public performances, and in others, kitchen bands were merely a pastime to keep children entertained.
