"Tru-Vue" Gift Box
Description
Tru-Vue manufactured this stereoscopic viewer to commemorate the completion of the Hoover Dam. Typically available in multiple colors, stereoscopic viewers were made primarily of Bakelite, an early plastic. The viewer has an aesthetic of Art Deco, a decorative style that became popular in the mid-1910s and took various incarnations through the late-1930s. Users advanced 35mm filmstrips through the viewer to operate the Tru-Vue using a built-in lever, and each frame appears in three dimensions when held up to a light source. This example, produced in the late 1930s, offers a photographic tour of Boulder Dam shortly after its construction.
