Title
Hard Hat
Description
This hard hat belonged to Elton Garrett, one of Boulder City’s most well-known residents, during his time as a reporter for the Las Vegas Age. Produced with canvas, leather, and black paint, this hard hat is similar in composition to those first manufactured by Edward W. Bullard in 1919. The word “JOURNAL” was painted across the side of the hat in white lettering so that others could quickly identify Garrett as press amongst construction workers while he visited the dam site. Most notably, Six Companies, Inc. required all workers to wear protective headgear while on the job, marking the construction of the Hoover Dam as the first project to enforce a hard hat policy.
